Overview

Course duration: 1 day.

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.

Should your first aid risk assessment indicate that only an appointed person is required and not a qualified first-aider, then this course will meet the legal requirements.

HSE recommendations where an appointed person is required is that:

Ø       The workplace is LOW HAZARD e.g., office, shop, library and

Ø       That there are less than 25 employees 

OR

Ø       The workplace is HIGH HAZARD e.g. factory, warehouse and

Ø       That there are less than 5 employees

Under such circumstances the HSE recommends that the appointed person is trained in the emergency first aid covered in this course.

It is an ideal starter course for anyone interested in first aid for their personal development.

This comprehensive one-day first aid course is very practical and will require participants to demonstrate procedures on the floor. Suitable clothing such as trousers and flat shoes are recommended.

What will I learn?

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the role of the appointed person including reference to:
    • The importance of preventing cross-infection
    • The need for recording incidents and actions
    • Use of available equipment
  • Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
  • Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)
